The Silver Cord program is an opportunity for students to be recognized for completing 100 hours of community service during their four years of high school. It is the intent of the Silver Cord program that hours be in direct service to others in need through local community service agencies and other outreach opportunities. Silver Cord hours must meet a clearly defined need for an agency, charity program, church, political agency, social service, group or community event.  In order for hours to be honored, the student may not receive payment or credit for their services and they may not be completed during their regular school day.  Service NOT recognized: School activities such as selling merchandise, homecoming events, music or athletic practices, work or babysitting for one’s family or any other family, participation in self-improvement workshops and clinics or service which is part of an academic, court-ordered, or disciplinary requirement. Service must be performed through a non-profit (501c3) agency or affiliated organization. Generally, activities that are part of BK's club, activity or course will not be counted toward Silver Cord hours. Seniors who complete the required hours of service will be honored at the Senior Recognition Assembly and will wear a silver cord at graduation.

Volunteer Opportunities include Breakfast with Santa each December, Summer Markets, Fall Festivals, working BK concession stands, etc. Contact the Jr/Sr. High School Counselor for more information.

The student council is a group of elected students who represent the opinions and interests of their fellow students within a school or institution. The council's primary responsibilities include planning and organizing events, managing student funds, addressing grievances, promoting school spirit, and working with school administration.

The size and structure of the student council may vary depending on the school's size and policies. At Belmond-Klemme we have a Junior High Student Council and a High School Student Council.

Student council participation offers numerous benefits for students, such as improving communication skills, leadership abilities, and teamwork. It also provides an opportunity to be involved in decision-making processes that affect the school community and to take part in organizing events and fundraising efforts.

Additionally, being a member of the student council can enhance a student's resume and help them stand out when applying for scholarships, internships, or jobs.

Belmond-Klemme is part of the Chester P. Luick Chapter of National Honor Society and are proud to say our chapter has been around for over 65 years. The chapter was named after Chester P. Luick, a resident of Belmond. The National Honor Society values students who have shown excellence in scholarship, leadership, character and service to the community. It is an honor to be inducted and continue to serve the Belmond-Klemme School District and community through works of service and fellowship.

To become a member of the National Honor Society (NHS), eligible sophomores, juniors and seniors may apply  for admission each year until they are accepted or graduate. Students should strive to achieve excellence in the four key areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Here's a breakdown of what students should aim to accomplish in each area:

1. Scholarship: NHS looks for students who have achieved high academic success. Students should work to maintain a high GPA, take challenging courses, and excel academically.
2. Leadership: NHS values students who demonstrate strong leadership skills in school, community, and extracurricular activities. Students should seek opportunities to lead and motivate others, take on leadership roles in clubs or organizations, and show a commitment to teamwork and initiative.
3. Service: NHS emphasizes the importance of community service and giving back. Students should engage in volunteer activities and demonstrate a willingness to help others. Participating in service projects, charity work, and community outreach can showcase a student's dedication to service.
4. Character: NHS seeks students who exhibit integrity, honesty, and respect for others. Students should strive to demonstrate good citizenship, ethical behavior, and respect for diversity and inclusivity.

Additionally, students should adhere to their school's specific requirements for NHS membership, which may include maintaining a certain GPA, completing a certain number of service hours, and participating in leadership opportunities.

By excelling in these areas, students can demonstrate their commitment to the principles of NHS and increase their chances of becoming a member.

Student members of a board of education are typically individuals who represent the interests of students within the school district. These individuals may be selected by the school board or appointed by the principal or school superintendent.

Their primary role is to advocate for policies and programs that benefit students and improve their educational experience. Some of the issues that student members of the board of education may address include curriculum development, funding for education programs, and student safety and well-being.

Students who serve as members of a public school board of education can benefit in various ways:

1. Advocacy Experience: Student board members gain valuable experience in advocating for the issues that affect their peers, such as curriculum development, funding for education programs, and student safety and well-being.

2. Leadership Development: Serving on the board provides an opportunity for students to develop their leadership and communication skills as they interact with school administrators, teachers, and community members.
